The purpose of this section is to provide basic help about the website and its features.
Should you still have questions or problems, feel free to post them in the Website Forum
or send an email to the webmaster.
- Logging into the Mission Site
The site now requires you to use your email address and password to log in. Should you
have problems with your email address (i.e. you didn't provide one on the old site), there
is also a legacy login option. This option allows you to use your previous username and
password to gain access.
- Upgrading your Account
The first time you log into the new site, you will be required to upgrade your account.
The upgrade process gathers some additional information - namely privacy information - and
then generates an email to your primary email account. This email contains a URL that must
be clicked to complete the upgrade. This ensures the email addresses in the mission database
are more accurate. In some rare cases, your email provider may prevent you from receiving
this email. Should this happen, please contact the webmaster and the issue can be resolved.
- What New?
After signing into the mission website, you will be directed to a page called What's New.
This page provides links to information letting you see what has changed since the last
time you logged into the mission website. You can use these links to jump directly to
the new items on the site.
- Adding News and Announcements
One of the primary designs of the new website was to provide a community environment.
As such, you can add news items (Church news, Brazil news, mission field news, etc.)
and announcements (birth, engagements, weddings, etc.) to the website. To add the item
go go to the News or Announcements page. Select the type of item you are interested in
adding. When the page opens, there are links to add the new item. Click on the link and
add the appropriate details. If you are adding an announcement, you can also add a photo
to the site. When the news or announcement has been created, a link to the mission forum
will be created providing the option to have discussions focused on the news or announcement
item.
- Subscribing to Messages
One of the new features of the website allows you to "subscribe" to a message. This means
you can have the website send you an email when a new message is posted in reply to a
message you or someone else posted on the site. This applies to all forums, news, and
announcement forums. When you find a message you would like to subscribe to, click on the
link to have an email sent to you. Then, you can select what should be sent - the whole message
or part of the message. You can edit and delete your subscriptions on your Profile page.
- Using the Basic Search Tool
The website has a number of search tools. The Basic Search Tool is designed to help you find
the person you are looking for using fuzzy logic on just the name. Fuzzy logic is a concept
that allows you to only enter part of the name and the search engine will find all of the matches
for your criteria. For example, if you knew the person's name was Michael, but weren't sure
if he went by Mike or Michael, you could enter "Mi" in the first name and then enter the last name.
The basic search tool lets you search against the first, middle, and last names of the individual.
- Using the Advanced Search Tool
The Advanced Search tool uses the same fuzzy logic processing as the basic search tool. However,
the advanced search tool provides much more customization. For example, you can specify what
type of person you are looking for (recently called missionaries, currently serving missionaries,
return missionaries, etc.). In addition, you can specify exact matches or fuzzy matches on the
person's name.
- Forum Search
The Forum Search lets you use free-form queries to find messages that have been posted in the
mission forums. For example, you could enter "I want to find monkeys in Brazil". When you
enter this into the search tool, you will get several results back. The engine will try
to match the words you entered. So, it will bring back topics that have used the words
"want", "find", "monkeys", and "Brazil". And yes, there was a discussion about the monkeys
in an older area of the mission.
