Welcome to the Brazil São Paulo South Mission Website! After
receiving your mission call to Brazil São Paulo, you must have a lot of questions and
a great desire to learn more about the people of Brazil, the culture, the mission,
and anything you can find about missionary life. What a great opportunity you have
to go out to the Brazilian people and teach the restored gospel of Jesus Christ!
The purpose of this page is to help answer some basic questions, provide pointers
to finding additional information on this website, provide some suggestions, and
help you in anyway possible. One of the first places you should visit is the
New Missionary Forum
where you can read discussions and questions
from other new missionaries and interact with mission alumni.
One of the first things you should know and understand is your new role as a missionary.
In Isaiah 18, Isaiah sends his greeting and some words of counsel to those that
would serve as Ambassadors of Christ. As a missionary, this is your role - you will
represent Christ to the people of São Paulo, Brazil. President Grant provided additional
knowledge concerning the role of a missionary - specifically those given the title of Elder.
President Grant explained the word Elder means defender of the faith. As you prepare to head
to Brazil, remember you will be serving as an Ambassador of Christ and most of you will have
the special title of "Defender of the Faith".
What Should I Bring?
One of the most frequently asked questions is always what should
I bring. The first piece of advice is bring the items indicated in your missionary
call. These items have been identified as a need for the Brazil São Paulo South Mission
and all missionaries should have these items. In addition, here are some general tips
that former missionaries have found helpful:
- Bring an inexpensive 35mm camera. APS film is much more expensive in Brazil and
a little more difficult to find. It also costs a lot more to develop. It is recommended
that you not bring a digital camera due to the difficutly in saving your images.
- Due to the growth in the banking system in Brazil, a Visa or Mastercard is an
excellent way to get money. Most banks now have ATM machines that will support a Visa
or Mastercard. Pick a card that is easy for your parents, has a low interest rate,
does not have annual fees, and provides good security should the card be lost or stolen.
- Don't bring adhesive envelopes. Brazil is very humid and very few places you will
go have any form of air conditioning. All of your envelopes will seal themselves shut
before you ever have a chance to use them.
- Once you get to Brazil, if an item is available there, it is generally better to
purchase the item in Brazil rather than have your parents send it to you. Packages
that are inspected by the government that contain items available in Brazil may
be taxed and you will need to pay this tax.
- You will be provided with scriptures in Portuguese when you arrive at the MTC.
You may purchase Portuguese scriptures if you like beforehand, but you will receive
another copy.
- You should bring enough money to the MTC to purchase a hymnal in Portuguese that
you can carry with you. You will put this hymnal to good use during your mission.
- Some items that are general not available (though, some can be found in some areas)
include Root Beer, Peanut Butter, American candy bars, maple syrup, most American pastries,
pancake or waffle mixes, and other boxed mixes like cakes, Stove Top, etc.
The following are sections of the mission website that may have information you would find
of value and interesting:
Mission History (includes Church in Brazil),
The Mission Today,
Mission Addresses, and
Other Links of Interest.
Please take a look around the site and if you have not registered yet, please do so and register
as a missionary. This will help ensure the best and most accurate information is available
to you (and it is required to participate in the mission forums).
